"Yeah" says Ben, "Our seKretary has been beary buzee (Jerry says lazee!) lately, so we left broshures lying around the house and begged to take a trip so that we culd get a new blog post!" As a result, we spent a couple of days in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.
We first traveled to Bayfield in northern Wisconsin.
Bayfield is a charming small town on Lake Superior, the largest fresh water lake in the world! We decided to take a boat tour of the Apostle Islands; twelve nearby islands in Lake Superior. You can see a couple of them in this photo:
One of the small islands is actually named Bear Island (but you can't visit it, it's only for animals!) The vast majority of the islands are not in fact inhabited. Several, however, once had manned lighthouses on them to help ships avoid them at night and during bad weather.
Today, any of the lighthouses that remain have automated lights and signals. We're glad so many are maintained so that people can visit them and see what life was like for the lighthouse keepers.
After our boat tour, we got to take our car on a ferry to Madeline Island!
Ben was beary excited because there is some French history on Madeline Island!
We traveled to Big Bay State Park to do some hiking along the rocky shore and bluffs!
Isn't the rocky shore beautiful! The hiking trails were really great, and we got to walk through some beautiful forested areas with lots of birch trees.
And we saw some really cool things, like the bright orange fungus or mushroom thing...
But we especially liked the amazing shores and Lake Superior!
Ben enjoyed looking over the cliff for fish in the beautiful and clear water, and Jerry made sure that Ben didn't look TOO far over the rocks.
After our hike and picnic lunch (there were some delicious snacks, so we were beary happy!), we visited the little Madeline Island history museum.
We got to see lots of artifacts about the early settlers, the Ojibwe native people who lived on the island, and the early French explorers to the region.
